A WEEKEND OF FIRSTS...

Experiencing Silverstone for the first time
In his first outing in the Radical sports racer, Sabre driver Neil Crilly finished 11th out of 23 starters at Silverstone in England on March 21st. Running under primary sponsorship from Savasort, with Associate support from Carbotech, the event was Crilly's first ever race at the famous British circuit which hosts the UK's Formula One race.

Friday's test day, the first time on a track in the car, produced a best lap time of 1:02.21 averaging 95 mph, leaving Crilly in good shape for the next day. Unfortunately though, a badly timed brake pad change necessitated that the first laps of Saturday's official qualifying session would have to be wasted bedding in the pads. Even more unfortunate was that, after running a few slow "bedding" laps with a fastest lap of 1:04.51-- two seconds off the previous day's best, the car's chain broke (the Radical has chain drive) effectively resulting in no real "hot" qualifying laps. The result was a poor 16th starting position. The real disappointment though was that if Saturday's best (set in identical conditions) was used, Crilly would have started from third on the grid...

The race start was a bit tense also, as the broken chain had damaged an engine cover and the necessary repair took until the last seconds before the start. Arriving at the last moment, and blasting off on his first ever standing start (rev to 10,000 rpm, then pop the clutch!), Crilly lost a couple of positions off the line, but gained them back by the third turn. He was then able to pass six cars over the short (ten lap) race to finish eleventh but ran out of time to move up further. Crilly commented: "Eleventh out of 23 was quite satisfying considering how new everything was new car, new track and a first standing start, but I am disappointed my Saturday best time wasn't my qualifying time!" Sponsor Savasort's President Phil Elmore was also at the race and was pleased with the result and the visibility of the bright yellow racer. Crilly's Radical race schedule will be changing due to new marketing and pro racing commitments, but the next outing will likely be at French circuit Dijon-Prenois in June.
